Summary

khaleed hosseini has described the war struck nation of Afghanistan in a narrative way in this book

Relevant。 Powerful。 Important。 For a story that concludes in a hopeful note, I can’t help but to weep and be heartbroken for the real-life situation and people it mirrors as they will face tragedy once again。 This is a book I’ll surely be thinking about。

This novel explored the crossing experiences of two very different Afghan women throughout the complex years of war in the country leading up to the fall of Taliban rule in the early 2000s。 If you've never explored the history or significance of the Taliban, this is a great place to start to learn about the injustices the group caused for all Afghans。 You'll also fall in love with the women in this novel and their resilience throughout decades of struggling。 This novel explored the crossing experiences of two very different Afghan women throughout the complex years of war in the country leading up to the fall of Taliban rule in the early 2000s。 If you've never explored the history or significance of the Taliban, this is a great place to start to learn about the injustices the group caused for all Afghans。 You'll also fall in love with the women in this novel and their resilience throughout decades of struggling。 。。。more

marched on Kabul after 20 years as the effect of Biden pulled out US Troops from the country, just。。 WOWPart IThe book begins its story of Mariam ( 5 y。o ) who lives with her mother, Nana, in a stranded Kolba, a place his father Jalil built for them when people found out that the Jalil had an affair with his own housekeepers whose no other than Mariam's mother。 As a penance, Jalil pays visits every Thursday and acts just like a good father to Mariam。 That until the spring of 1974 when 15 y。o Mariam asked Jalil to take her to the cinema to watch Pinocchio。 Mariam waited for Jalil but no sign of her dad coming until Mariam did the unthinkable as she ran away to Jalil's house。 Even after the guard shooed her but Mariam insisted and slept like an astray dog in front of the gate until the next day she took a glimpse of Jalil who stood in his office room, that's when Mariam understands about the curse Nana told her before, that she's just a Harami, and Jalil doesn't want her presence in his house。 Mariam ran back to her Kolba, only to find Nana hang herself onto a tree。Jalil brought devastated Mariam back to his house and all of his legitimate wives decided to force Mariam to married Rasheed as a way to kick Mariam out of the house。 After the wedding, Mariam faces another hardship after her countless miscarriages make Rasheed always in a rage and spiteful towards Mariam。 April 1978 Rasheed shoved peebles into Mariam's mouth when he thought the rice Mariam made was too hard to chew。 Down the street, their neighbor Fariba gave birth to a daughter, named LailaPart II Spring 1987This chapter tells the story of Laila (9。yo) who waits for her best friend Tariq to come back from visiting his uncle。 Meanwhile, in her household, her Mammi Fariba shuts herself off ever since the day both of her sons Ahmad & Noor been taken from the Military to join the war。 Laila and her father Babi, Hakim, have to take care of the house by themselves。 Until several weeks later a stranger delivered the news that both of Laila's older brothers died。April 1992, Kabul is in chaos as rockets and gunfires are being shot。 Tariq told Laila if he'll leave for Pakistan tomorrow, Tariq tried to persuade her to get married and leave Kabul with his family。 Tho Laila said No because her Mammy insisted to never leave the country, the two of them part ways by making love。 A couple of weeks after Tariq left her, her parent came with an agreement to leave Kabul。 The day when they are about to leave, a rocket hit Laila's house and killed her parent。Part IIILaila wakes up inside Rasheed & Mariam's house。 A man came with the news if Tariq and all of his family died during their attempt to fly off the country。 Soon Mariam realizes if there's a reason why Rasheed pulled Laila out of the rubbles and gave her a sheltered place。 Her suspicion was right when Rasheed forced Laila to marry him。 Laila, who notices that she skipped a cycle found no other option but to marry Rasheed for the sake of Tariq's baby who's living inside her belly。Mariam thought Laila is a bitch who tried to steal everything from her, even though her life with Rasheed is nothing but just mistreatment。 Laila couldn't tell the truth about her pregnancy so she has to endure Mariam's cold treatment。Until a year later, in 1993, Laila gave birth to a daughter in which pissed the hell out of Rasheed who wanted to have a son to replace his first son who died drowning in the lake。 The baby, named Aziza, has Tariq's eyes, which gives another reason for Laila to keep on living no matter the situation she has to endure even after Rasheed's frontal change of behavior towards her。Just after the first time when Mariam held baby Aziza then she started to show her soft sides to Laila。 The relationship grows fonder between them two。Spring 1994, their attempt to escape from Rasheed failed and Rasheed punished them both so severely。1996 the day when the Taliban overtook Kabul, Laila felt something stirred inside her belly。 A year later she gave birth to Zalmai, a son who adored Rasheed so much it hurts Laila to see Rasheed treats Zalmai like a King。 In 2001 Rasheed sent Aziza to an orphanage because he couldn't afford to feed the 5 of them anymore。And then one day, Zalmai shrieked when he saw a man standing at the front door of their house。 It's Tariq。 It was then revealed that Rasheed had paid some man to make up a fake story about Tariq's death just so Laila had no chance to escape from the house。During dinner, Zalmai told Rasheed if there was a man who came and talked to Laila。 Just after Rasheed told Zalmai to go to his room, he then beat the hell out of Laila。 Mariam ran to get a shovel and used it to kill Rasheed。 After Laila was conscious of her almost dead condition when Rasheed strangled her neck, they buried Rasheed, and the next day Mariam came to a decision that only Laila and her children who'll run with Tariq。 Mariam won't risk Laila's future if the Taliban find out about Rasheed's dead body and they will strictly punish whoever do the killing as that's one of their rules。Mariam went into prison for several days while waiting for her final verdict in which she insisted that she had killed Rasheed for their own protection but the Judge still gives her the death penalty。They then took Mariam to Ghazi Stadium and executed her there。Part IVThe story follows the life after Laila, Tariq, and the children Aziza & Zalmai ran to live in Murree, Pakistan。 Until 2002 when Laila asked Tariq to go back home, live in Kabul as the situation gets better there。 The first destination she made was to visit Herat, Mariam's childhood place。 She searched for Mullah Faizullah's home, the mullah who taught Mariam to recite Koran back then。 The Mullah's son greeted her and told her that both Mullah and Jalil had died a few years back。 Laila then visited the Kobla, which is still there and she witnessed all the story Mariam once shared is revealing in front of her eyes。 Then the Mullah's son gave her a box in which before Jalil died, Jalil asked Mullah to give the box whenever Mariam decided to come back to Herat。 Know that everyone is dead, the Mullah's son gave the box to Laila in which later Laila opened and found a letter from Jalil, a videotape with Pinocchio movie inside (a movie in which Mariam asked Jalil to see), and money as part of what Mariam inherited from Jalil。Epilogue。 Laila works as a teacher in the same orphanage the one she sent Aziza back then。 。。。more

I was given this book to read for school, and usually when the school gives me a book to read I never actually end up reading it all because it’s always boring。 This book was the exception。 As soon as I picked it up and started reading it I couldn’t stop, it really caught me in this world, I felt connected with the characters。 It broke my heart so many times but at the same time it fixed it。 I thought it was a fascinating experience to read about a completely different culture, the setting, the I was given this book to read for school, and usually when the school gives me a book to read I never actually end up reading it all because it’s always boring。 This book was the exception。 As soon as I picked it up and started reading it I couldn’t stop, it really caught me in this world, I felt connected with the characters。 It broke my heart so many times but at the same time it fixed it。 I thought it was a fascinating experience to read about a completely different culture, the setting, the language, the people, everything。 It’ll definitely make you cry, I lost count of the amount of times I cried。 It also made me grateful to be a woman in this time for having the opportunities and the freedom that Mariam and Laila couldn’t have。A beautiful book。 。。。more

Impacting wonder!Even more with what is happening in Kabul right now。 This book retrace the suffering of 2 Afghan women in a writing that is both very addictive and so factually true。 It is a great way to open your mind to what happened and is still happening in Afghanistan while being hooked on the personal stories of Maryam and Laïla。I try to make it simple because there is either no words for this book or I would need thousands。I am definitely reading Khaled Hosseini's other books。Basically, Impacting wonder!Even more with what is happening in Kabul right now。 This book retrace the suffering of 2 Afghan women in a writing that is both very addictive and so factually true。 It is a great way to open your mind to what happened and is still happening in Afghanistan while being hooked on the personal stories of Maryam and Laïla。I try to make it simple because there is either no words for this book or I would need thousands。I am definitely reading Khaled Hosseini's other books。Basically, I loved it! This book made me feel emotions I did not even know existed。 It made me cry, smile and undesrtand different nations and ways of living much better。 At the end of the book I found myself more grateful for the life I live and things I have, but also more empathetic for other people。。。 Also, Khaled Hosseini never fails to fascinate me with his way of simple but such beautiful writing。 Such a great read!!

Throughout this entire book, I was moved。 I was saddened more and more by every page but got the privilege to learn more of a culture that I desire to learn more about。 This story was one of war。 Heartbreak。 Trauma。 Deep hurt。 The way the story is told is remarkable。 Easy 5 stars!

I need to reread this, but at the time, it was one of the most heartbreaking things I'd ever read。 Understanding the titular beauty of Kabul as described by Saib-e Tabrizi in contrast the contemporary horror it had become is incomprehensible。 I was in tears every page。 An intimate portrayal of friendship and survival that resonates a greater tragic history and understanding。 I might be cheesy, but despite the suffering, love and joy anchors it all。 I need to reread this, but at the time, it was one of the most heartbreaking things I'd ever read。 Understanding the titular beauty of Kabul as described by Saib-e Tabrizi in contrast the contemporary horror it had become is incomprehensible。 I was in tears every page。 An intimate portrayal of friendship and survival that resonates a greater tragic history and understanding。 I might be cheesy, but despite the suffering, love and joy anchors it all。 。。。more

Splendidă! Khaled Hosseini este un autor fabulos, care te captivează cu poveștile lui。 Din păcate, adevărurile crude din romanele scrise de el încă domnesc asupra acestei “cetăți”。

If I could give this 10 stars, I would。 I would give it a thousand splendid stars。 Absolutely brilliant writing and such a heart-wrenching story。。。 I've lost count of the number of times my heart went to a character in this novel。 The indescribable horrors have been penned with such understanding, caring, careful hands and the pace of the story is not rushed or hurried; it flows like a brook in the forest in summertime。 To every lover of stories (be it written on paper or presented on a screen), If I could give this 10 stars, I would。 I would give it a thousand splendid stars。 Absolutely brilliant writing and such a heart-wrenching story。。。 I've lost count of the number of times my heart went to a character in this novel。 The indescribable horrors have been penned with such understanding, caring, careful hands and the pace of the story is not rushed or hurried; it flows like a brook in the forest in summertime。 To every lover of stories (be it written on paper or presented on a screen), read this and bless your hearts with this life altering journey- let Hosseini be your guide and let him work his magic。 ❤️ 。。。more

An incredible and heart-wrenching story。 Although it features some brutal and graphic violence throughout, I found that the message was to convey the resilience and strength of the characters involved。 To prevail even in the harshest of environment。 To continue even when times are at their toughest。 This comfortably sits on my must read! recommendation list。 The story telling is believable, and moving。 I must get my hands on more of Hosseini’s work。

。。。more

Picking this one up, I was fully aware of the journey it was going to take me through, knowing there won't be a truly 'happy ending' to the lives of Afghan people regardless of how the book ends。 It is hard to fathom the lengths people go to, the horror they inflict on others, for power and fear, and all in the name of religion。 Picking this one up, I was fully aware of the journey it was going to take me through, knowing there won't be a truly 'happy ending' to the lives of Afghan people regardless of how the book ends。 It is hard to fathom the lengths people go to, the horror they inflict on others, for power and fear, and all in the name of religion。 。。。more
